Preah Vihear Temple Safari

2 days / 1 nights

Preah Vihear is the most spectacularly situated of any of the Angkorian temples, clinging to a clifftop on the Dangrek Mountains high above the plains of Cambodia, and on the border with Thailand. Spending the night at this most mountainous of mountain temples is a fabulous experience.

In detail

Day 1: Siem Reap to Preah Vihear Temple Safari

After an early breakfast in Siem Reap, we journey towards the magnificent mountain temple of Preah Vihear, straddling the border with Thailand. The snaking road up the mountain is very steep in places and we eventually emerge at the second enclosure of this king of the mountain temples. We explore the temple on foot and continue onwards to the final level, clinging to a cliff face in the Dangrek Mountains, towering hundreds of metres above lowland Cambodia below. The views from this most mountainous of temple mountains are breathtaking, the foundation stones of the temple stretching to the edge of the cliff as it plunges precipitously away to the plains of Preah Vihear province below. We stay overnight in our safari tented camp.

Day 2: Preah Vihear to Anlong Veng and onto Siem Reap

After one final visit to Preah Vihear, we continue our journey to Anlong Veng, a former Khmer Rouge stronghold until the end of the civil war in 1998 where we visit some of the notable former Khmer Rouge locations before returning to our base at Siem Reap.

Alternatively, we can head south from Preah Vihear to visit the temple complex of Koh Ker on our return journey to Siem Reap.
